Review: Dead Space 3 ‘Awakened’ DLC (PS3)

So I was able to finally convince Alexis to play Dead Space 3 Awakened, after constantly coming up with excuses not to play it due to her scaerdypantsitis (it’s totally a real word). This $10 DLC definitely ramped up the horror, something that was kinda lacking in the main game but it was not without some huge flaws:

Pros:

  • Horror element turned up to the max! This was all about straight mind eff’s! One of the great things about DS3 was the co-op missions where the player controlling Carver would see things on the screen while the other player does not see the same things. This DLC does this again but this time Isaac and Carver are sharing the crazy!
  • We find out what happened to Isaac and Carver at the end of the main game, but there are questions as to whether or not they really did survive…
  • New freaky enemies add to the already messed up roster of baddies, all lead by an even more insane leader than the main game baddie was.

Cons:

  • The game is TOO FREAKIN SHORT!!!! If not for the technical difficulties trying to live stream the game (we should have our gameplay footage up on our YouTube page soon) we finished the 3 chapters in about 2 hours. I find this to be a bit absurd considering how many other games release DLC content that is robust and can last several hours (i.e. Read Dead Redemption).
  • While entertaining the DLC is not worth $10. I have no idea what other DLC, if any, they might release but if it’s going to be like this one I am going to think twice about purchasing it. Then again I should not have been that surprised by the cheap offering in this DLC, it is EA we are dealing with here.
  • No new rigs, only one weapon modification that wasn’t too special…just nothing else of value that would add to the gameplay. I was pretty much satisfied with the weapons I created in the main campaign so I didn’t bother using the MK II frame that is picked up in this DLC (although I should have since it nets a trophy).

While fun this DLC was not worth the price of admission especially since it ended so quickly. If you are a huge fan of the series you probably got the season pass for the game and you might not have as such a bitter taste in your mouth like I did at the end of this game. Anyone else thinking of getting this DLC you might want to think really hard on purchasing it.
