Review: Labyrinth Legends (PlayStation 3)

We got the chance to play Labyrinth Legends over the weekend.  The idea behind the game is cute, you are about to get married when some ominous black cloud attacks your wedding and takes your wife.  You then become a knight and attempt to solve several labyrinths in order to get through the map and to rescue your wife.

LOVEs:

  • The art style (within the mazes)
  • The puzzles (I love puzzles!)
  • In death animations are adorable.

HATEs:

  • Bad game design, in one of the first levels I played (I believe it was the third maze) I got stuck because I didn’t realize I had to run across something before it completely collapsed.  So because I didn’t run fast enough the maze was set off the trigger and I couldn’t get pass the level.
  • Oh I got stuck in a level too behind an obstacle, I went to get some coins and boom I got stuck.  I had to hold down the square button in order to get out behind from it.
  • Having to restart from the beginning of the maze, rather than a checkpoint.  This coincides with the first point, rather than reseting that part of the maze, say if I left that room and came back, I have to start from the beginning rather than the end.
  • Unclear multiplayer modes, yes there are multiplayer modes.  But how do you get to play with a friend?  Is it offline or online? I had to find out through an email to the developer that it’s local co-op only, bummer.
  • Dumb AI, my “partner” is a complete failure, instead of coming to my aid, he just let’s me die – thanks for nothing!

Overall, the game had a lot of great puzzles, but the poor design holds the player back from really enjoying the game fully.  I hope that there is a patch out to maybe fix some of those things that we hated.
