Movie Review: Real Steel

A great boxer once said, “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” ~ Muhammad Ali. In the ring the whole world is at your attention, its just you versus another person with the end result making you a champion or chump. The world of “Real Steel” begins with the life of Charlie Kenton, a down the dumps dude. Until he faces a life changing obstacle, if you truly believe in yourself and your abilities then you will never fall for anything life throw at you.

It’s 2020 and boxing has gone through an industrial evolution where robots take the place of human fighters making it much more interesting and a lot more brutal. The lead character Charlie Kenton has hit rock bottom and treating the world as a playground to get ahead but then something happens. The story becomes interesting when Max Kenton, Charlie’s son shows up after his mother’s death and basically Charlie does not want anything to do with him. In time the father/son relationship develops with the help of a busted up fight bot that has hidden potential.  This is when the story becomes even more interesting.

The lead role of Charlie is played by Hugh Jackman and frankly I was impressed with his performance, I always tend to see actors in the same role all the time. However, Jackman never seems to fail at changing up his style with each movie he plays. The son Max is played by Dakota Goyo. The love interest role is Bailey Tallet played by Evangeline Lilly, the strong female lead.  She shows a strong will and never gives up on Charlie, who has true potential.

The movie will surprise you by being a family flick and give you a reason to carry tissues when you cry during the mushy parts of the film. The 3D animation of the robots flowed really well and having Sugar Ray Leonard doing the fight choreography was a great bonus. The film is based in a near future, but there is no over the top futuristic feel in the movie, which was appreciated. The fact that they kept it simple with only showing the robots as the futuristic part makes its a more believable story. There were several antagonist, however I can’t really bring those people up without giving up too much of the ending.

I have to say that “Real Steel” was definitely a great movie to watch and well paced at the same time. The movie is out now so I would say take the kids or the significant other to watch this great film.

The “Real Steel” game is also out now on Xbox Live Arcade so I shall be reviewing that soon and I shall let you know how that goes. I do hope you enjoyed what I had to say, be here for the latest of everything we do awesome and stay frosty!
