Things We’re Diggin’: Kings of Hip Hop by Borbay

I’ll definitely be going to this, especially since its at my job!

NEW YORK, NY – AUGUST 25, 2011 — Time Out New York’s 2009 Most Creative New Yorker, Borbay will unveil his seven #KingsOfHipHop to the world on Thursday, September 15, 2011, from 7-10PM at Publicis Modem. Brought to you by Bomb Lager, this series of seven 30″X30″ New York Post and acrylic collage-paintings on canvas portray the likenesses of Jay-Z, Kanye West, Diddy, Lil Wayne, Dr. Dre, Eminem and Snoop Dogg.

Selected based on a strict set of criteria: each artist had to release an album within one year of January 2011, be active in social media and possess a strong entrepreneurial vision. All seven Kings stand silently, mouths closed, amidst, in-front-of, and behind their words. The correlation between the slow decay of traditional print media and the ever changing music business landscape served as the catalyst for both the subject, and physical media. Beyond inspiring with the poetic, naked expressionism of hip-hop, each of these artists has helped liberate their art from the boilerplate of business first, creative last.

Completed in July, Borbay’s #KingsOfHipHop accurately predicted 1-4, and 7 of Forbes Magazine top 8 “Cash Kings 2011: Hip-Hop’s Top Earners“.
