Things We’re Diggin’: Shepard Fairey’s ‘They Live’ Movie Poster

If anyone knows about Shepard Fairey then you know that he not only got the idea for the OBEY Giant image from Andre the Giant but he was also inspired by John Carpenter’s film ‘They Live’. The movie, which stars another wrestling superstar “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, follows an unemployed construction worker that stumbles upon an alien conspiracy to control humans but placing subliminal messages in everything from magazines, billboards, and television to the money we have in our pockets. The way he discovers this is by putting on special sunglasses that break through the signal and allows the wearer to really see what the aliens look like and expose their subliminal messages of “Obey”. Fairey for years has said that if it weren’t for this film’s messages about consumerism and government control he would have never had as great of a success with the OBEY Giant campaign. So it was only right that the Alamo Draft House get together with Director John Carpenter and Fairey to have this incredibly amazing movie poster done for their special screening of the film. I am really surprised that this wasn’t done earlier but I guess better late than never. Prints of the poster WAS available on Mondo Tees but they are presently sold out. Hopefully they will do more prints as this poster is just too awesome not to have.
