Review: BulletStorm Epic Edition

I believe that drinking and driving is a big no, no and should go double when you are flying in outer space with a ship full of weapons! This is the BulletStorm Epic Edition review and I have to warn you, it will be full of rude and vulgar commentary as well as Flamed assholes galore!

The story is simple, the government was using their best (called Dead Echo) to assassinate bad people. However you come to find out that the people who were “bad” were actually innocent and those assassins took the fall and were made to be criminals. It is a shit storm of lies that just keep getting worse. You play as Grayson Hunt, a drunken space pirate whose gone AWOL, after being betrayed by General Sarrano.  After Hunt attempts to take revenge on Sarrano, both their ships crash land on Stygia, a former resort planet which is now overrun by all kinds of crap. The planet is full of cannibals, huge monsters, mutations and other deadly vegetation. A breeding ground for the best chaos you could imagine!  The enemies of the game varies between mutants, skulls and freaking Godzilla like Monsters, but remember you are after General Sarrano who screwed you over. Trust me when I say this, you will want to put a boot through his arrogant head all through the game!

All right now that you’re up to speed on how we ended up in this shitstorm of a situation, we can move on to the action part of the game. The game is built off the “Unreal Engine”. The combat in the game is very similar to Gears of War.  In the game everything is fast paced brutality or as my co-worker stated “It is a kill a minute!” game.

The idea is to be quick and find the best way to kill your opponents with “Skill Shots”. The “Skill Shot” points are used to upgrade your weapons, buy more ammo or special features. The more points you get the better your weapon will be, so try to be as creative as possible when you kill, becuase you might get lucky and unlock skills that are not on the list. In terms of list, each weapon you use will have a list of specific kills to do with them. The weapons you use are as follows:

  • Peacemaker Carbine – Assualt rifle
  • Boneduster – Four barrel ShotGun
  • Flail Gun – Fires Chain Linked Grenades
  • Bouncer – Shoots Bouncing Cannon Balls
  • Energy Leash – Energy Whip
  • Mini Gun –  Fires 20mm cannon rounds
  • Screamer – 8 shot Revolver
  • HeadHunter – Sniper rifle
  • Penetrator – Fire Drills

The one thing that makes it interesting is the characters. The crew is a short lived bunch but they all have interesting personalities, but the one that will be with you through out the campaign is Ishi, who is a cyborg. Then you have the sexy Trishka who has an interesting role in the games story but I shall not spoil it, I want you all to have the same reaction as I did.

In the multiplayer, you have a 4 player teamed based horde mode. In the group, you must accumilate the most points to reach the next level of the missions, some of the kills are specific to each enemy, so pay attention when the prompt comes up. The better you do in each mission, you will be granted a new level to unlock weapons and character customization.

The next mode is “Echo Mode” which is a point based system going through a level trying to reach the end with the most points as shown in the demo if you played it. I hope many of you got the epic edition so you can join me in the Gears of War 3 beta, remember QBSamurai on Xbox Live.

I talked enough about the good, lets touch base on the bad of Bulletstorm…….So far the only thing is the graphics kind of fade out of texture half the time and there are a few glitches, where the enemies fall through the map and pop back up again. It is not that bad because it is not happening to you frankly, however the textures could of been better. I found it annoying using some of the weapons, because they sounded good on paper but when using them, it was very crazy. I only stuck with a few weapons at a time and I would recommend the Boneduster, Screamer, Penetrator, Headhunter, Flail Gun and of course Peacemaker Carbine.

The game is about seven hours I would say and I would suggest playing on the hardest difficulties to make it more interesting. The multiplayer is not all that too be desired, even though they encourage you to work as a team, nobody really follows that method. That is all I can say bad about the game really.

The final verdict for Bulletstorm is BUY! Yes buy it, Bulletstorm has everything you could ever want in a shooter and the some. I mean with all the cursing, killings, monsters, the hottie with a gun, drunk driving (don’t do that in real life!) and of course being screwed over the worst way imaginable. I have to say Epic Games gets my vote of approval for giving us something that makes us laugh and feel sorryf or some of the people in the game.

I salute you Cliff and the rest of the team at Epic, plus People Can Fly for bringing tears to my eyes for making an awesome shooter. Stay frosty!
