Review: Enslaved Odyssey to the West

I know one thing that I can’t stand the most is having my freedoms taken away, however its worse when you are outsmarted by a kid and forced into helping her or die. Introducing Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, a post-apocalyptic game where you play as a slaver named Monkey forced to help out a tech civilian named Tripp survive the outside world. It is now a force partnership where Monkey not only has to worry about his head but Tripps as well, because if she dies he dies. Check out more after jump.

The game begins with you trapped on a prison looking at Tripp get out and cause the ship damage. The idea was to get out in the first place, but now it is a race to get to the escape pods before they are all gone and the ship crashes. This is where you will learn some of the basics of Monkey’s combat skills after you pick up your equipment to deal with the first set of mechs. Try not to take too long since the ship is crashing and there are escape pods being launched!

The combat controls are real simple to master with your light to heavy combination’s. If you hold the light attack button, it will charge your staff for a stun attack; which will leave the enemies open for a furious attack. If you press the light attack and the action button together, you can perform a wide attack. The enemies themselves will adapt to your attacks, so try not to be repetitive or they will continue to block your attacks. There is a dodge and block feature with the trigger buttons, later on you will be able to gain control of Tripp to give her some commands to launch decoys or move to better cover while you act as a decoy. Having a useful partner has been a long time coming in any adventure game dealing with a damsel and a hero.

I would like to test out my first strategy video with my own voice sync in, so please enjoy this boss fight tutorial and gives you a look at two of Monkey’s main accessories.

The graphics are very impressive, especially since you feel like you are in an interactive movie. There will be other characters in the game that you shall meet, including Monkey’s friend Pigsy that has a crush on tripp. Piggy would be considered the marksman of the game, kind of the junkyard buddy comedy aspect that is lazy, disgusting but handy to keep around. I enjoy how lively the game is and playing as Monkey does give you that sense of power when battling the robots including the turrets that can be taken over for your advantage against mechs that come in a group against Tripp.

The game gives you more than a single player feel which I had mention earlier, however there are some glitches as I showed one in the tutorial video where the robot got stuck. The other events Monkey will totally disappear out of cut-scenes, other than those minor problems the game will keep you entertained for hours with 15 chapters to get through and disturbing events that will leave you hanging off your chair. After that the replay value will be low only to go back and get the extra achievements/trophies for beating it on hard mode.

In the end Enslaved Odyssey To The West is a “BUY” and a single player game that is $59.99 that is worth the price is a first for me. It is a unique story, interesting post apocalyptic environments, a twist on the damsel in distress concept, great voice acting, awesome graphics, and combat that actually makes you feel like an unstoppable warrior on a leash that is. The only downside is minor glitches in cut-scenes and so far one boss fight. Enslaved is out now for PS3, Xbox360 and PC; so please check it out and as always stay frosty gamers.
