Review: Max Payne 3 (PS3)

Okay so you know how excited I was to fucking get this game, and Rockstar was nice enough to send me a copy along with some other goodies (Max Payne 3 bullet and shirt). So of course I rushed home and started playing it.  I ran through the beginning of the game fairly quickly  (I’m half way through the game) skipping some of the scenes that I already knew about, from playing at Pax Prime and NYCC.  I have to say that the game is awesome and I love the story line.

However I do have to say and I’m sure some of you guys will agree that dude Passos does nothing but be lazy.  There were times in the game he just fucking did nothing but twiddle his fucking thumbs and watch me die instead of helping me.  Another gripe, I want to know what the Portuguese characters are saying.  Although there are subtitles, which I find far too small to read, they don’t translate the Portuguese which kinda doesn’t help when I wanna know what they are saying.  Besides the subtitles not translating the Portuguese in the game, the story line is really good.  I especially love how the game goes back and forth between the present and the past.  I think that part of the game does an amazing job of transitioning between the two story lines. I’m quite excited to try out the New York Minute, once I finish the game.

Multiplayer is awesome, although I’ve had some difficulties getting connected.  Connecting to multiplayer has frozen my PS3 (both phat and slim consoles) on multiple occasions.  My other crew members had the same issues, and there were times when we didn’t even get to be on the same team, when there were enough team members to even the teams out.  Of course there are gripes with multiplayer as well, I don’t get why people in your party invite can’t invite their own friends?  That seems like something that is really important, at least to me it is. Especially if I have a friend that has no one on their list to play with but I do and can’t invite them to our party.

A mode of multiplayer called Payne Killer, which is basically a deathmatch game in the beginning of the match and then the two highest killers turn into be Max and Passos.  Once the two players are chosen, it is everyone against the Max and Passos.  As the match progresses, the Max and Passos team change, swapping Max and Passos when another player kills either one of them respectively.  It’s quite fun especially because Max and Passos are a bit overpowered.  I’ve managed to be Max/Passos a couple of times before being knocked off my high throne. Another multiplayer mode called Gang Wars was fun but I have a feeling I really would only play that with a full party, because it was hard to play when people aren’t willing to do objectives.  However one of the Gang Wars that I did went well and ended tying up and went into sudden death “Showdown” mode, a straight Team Deathmatch until the time runs out. Other modes include Large Team Deathmatch and Large Deathmath, which is 16 players on a full map, which just scares me.  However, I haven’t managed to get into a room yet because it always freezes up in the lobby, and I never get into the game.  I’m sure that Rockstar is trying to remedy all the issues with multiplayer as soon as possible but its really killing me I wanna try the other multiplayer games.

Although I have issues with the game, I still throughly enjoy the game and would totally recommend it to anyone!  Especially with the new additions to Rockstar Social Club network.  I guess the only thing we can hope for now is a patch to fix all these things.  Either way enjoy the game cause it’s the bomb!
