Review: Gelaskins

gelaskins

So, we were lucky enough to get some really cool review items last month, and we are now finally able to give Gelaskins the proper review they deserve.

Gelaskins is a pretty cool concept for people that want to customize their gadgets without getting too crazy and actually opening up their gadgets to customize them.  It’s a safe and easy way to make your gadgets stand out and look cool and different.

Check out the review after the jump…

Gelaskins “cover” a good amount of the varies gadgets, such as:

  • iPhone
  • DSLite – (hopefully we will see DSi skins too)
  • PSP Slim & 3000 – (sorry no PHAT PSP skin (we would like one of those too)
  • Macbooks & PC laptops
  • Netbooks
  • Kindle 2 (available through Amazon.com) – (How come no kindle 1? I would love to see that I have a kindle 1)
  • and a variety of iPods

We received these skins:

  • Kathie Olivias iPhone (3G edition)
  • Brandt Peters iPhone (3G edition)
  • Joe Ledbetter iPhone (3G edition)
  • Brandt Peters DSLite
  • Kathie Olivias DSLite
  • Joe Ledbetter PSP (Slim Edition)

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try out the iPhone 3G skin personally, however my good friend saki did.   She sent me a picture of her new skin, which might I add she loved!

What attracted me the most about Gelaskins were the amount of artists that they had.  They have artists of all different ranges from Vincent Van Gogh to Yosuke Ueno.  A list of artists can be found here.

Pricing

Price wise the Gelaskin are fairly reasonable with prices ranging from $14.95 to $29.95, which isn’t bad when you just want to have a new look for your gadget that isn’t exactly permanent.

Appearance

The artwork on all the Gelaskins that we got were awesome.  Everything looked great, nothing looked lo-res.

Durability

We wanted to test out how “scratch proof” the Gelaskins actually were so we went to town on one of the skins (sorry Brandt Peters, but we had to).

(NOTE: This is not how the skin should fit on the iPhone, it only looks like this because the skin is for the 3G version and the iPhone it was tested on is an iPhone first generation-we only did this so that we could test it on a phone to see how well it stood up)

The before and after pics are pretty impressive.  (the left is before and the right is after)

Ease of Use

Applying the GelaSkin to the iPhone 3G was a no brainer, but the PSP & DS was somewhat difficult because of all the buttons on the face of the system.  I would much rather have the GelaSkin for the DS & PSP in two pieces rather than one whole piece (at least where the buttons were).  It might have been easier to apply.

My gripe with the DS Lite was that there were these odd shapes, from the Nintendo logo that’s on the front of the DS.  It left this odd shape in the skin. Also, the 3M backing kinda showed a little because of me pressing so hard with my credit card, so I noticed it more.

My only suggestion for anyone that applies the skin, use a credit card or a bone folder.  Anything that will smooth out the edges.

A plus to the Gelaskin line, is that they don’t leave your gadget with any residue, which is always good for you obsessive types.  I expected the skin to leave something on my gadget because the backing is definitely sticky.

Downloading skins

Downloading the wallpapers onto your devices was very easy as well, especially for the iPhone and PSP.

To download the wallpapers simply navigate to there site here.  They made it super easy for iPhone users, as soon as you navigate to the wallpaper area, you are prompted with the instructions.  You can opt to get the instructions only the first time you go there with your iPhone, or you can have them everytime, which I liked.

And just follow the instructions. Their pictures make it so EASY to get what you want instantly.

Final Thoughts

We loved them and recommend them to anyone who is looking for something new to improve their already awesome gadget to GOD-like status!

We give it a 10 out of 10
